Southerndown Surf Lifesaving Club.
Revised Minutes of the meeting on Wednesday 5th September.
Present: Jane, Bev, Max, Rhys, Aled, Tom C, Tom D, Fiona, Karen, Paul, James, Delyth, Carol, Ceri, Bec, Huw.
Apologies: Will, Nick, Richard, Phil.
Matters Arising.
Still chasing Competency fees.
Still need somewhere for presentation evening, delay until November. Disco and band. Nominations needed for awards.
Dolygaer on hold at the moment, delay until March/April. Karen said she was unhappy to take the ultimate responsibility after recent criticism and someone else was welcome to organise it. No volunteers came forward.
Item in the Echo about the council lifeguards on Southerndown.
Have received lots more applications for membership online.
Still no payments received for surfboard storage, will have to remove boards if no payment made. Will made arrangements with James as the club owed him money.
Any Other Business.
Paul.
Only 12 entries for the Welsh Championships despite being the 5th largest club. Need to put some incentives in place. In club competitions was suggested, Max offered to organise and Ceri will oversee.
Carol suggested maybe making it compulsory for nippers to attend one carnival a season and perhaps make it compulsory for parents to stay on beach during training so they can be more easily informed about them. Karen replied this is unnecessary as they had newsletters throughout the summer and communicated via a notice board. All nippers and parents were well informed and very happy. The lack of interest in competition this year was due to very bad weather and lack of support as Karen was the only person able to go and organise on the beach ? not a problem with training or information.
Problems with summer training sessions and lack of coaches discussed. More help would help encourage new competitors. Maybe introduce competitions into training session. Perhaps have coaching rotas so coaches don?t have to attend all the training session. No help offered by anyone except Tom D who has done a grand job helping with juniors. Individuals or groups should not make complaints unless they are willing to help. Otherwise these complaints are not valid and just serve to upset the people who are running the day to day business/matters of the club without whom large sections of the club would fold.
Paul suggested asking Dylan?s father for help with senior swimming coaching, although it was agreed that the winter pool sessions last year had been excellent.
Ceri.
New boards needed. Everyone agreed. Some members are ordering Kracka boards, maybe add onto this order. Boards may not be ready until September 2008. Perhaps ring other clubs to see if they are ordering boards.
Request for a donation from the club to Cancer Research Wales. Ed Evans who attended the 25th anniversary party has an incurable brain tumour and has asked for donations to this charity on his behalf. A £50 donation agreed, individual members can donate more if they wish.
Coaching course needs to be run again, if intending to coach must do coarse. Max made a complaint about the content of the course. Karen was sorry to hear this and felt it was no longer appropriate for the course to run in light of this evaluation. She suggested members pay to go on the SLSA GB or Sports Coach
Tom C.
Request for new shovel. Agreed by committee. Huw bought him a spade.
James.
Do we know if and when the 3 bays race at
Delyth.
Date for Caps night is Saturday 22nd September. Cardiff Ski race is on 29th/30th September.
Jane.
Sam Stephens has resigned from the club. Sam asked permission to join Rhoose, this was agreed by the club.
Max.
Complaint made about the attitude of some council lifeguards towards him when he was on the beach.
The club are not in a position to discipline council lifeguards, so it was up to him to take it up with the persons involved. It was however agreed, that in the interest of the club, it was better for council and volunteer lifeguards to get along. It was felt that this case was not a committee issue and Max was told as such.
Karen.
Julie Johnson has offered to take the role of female child protection officer, as Karen has stood down. Agreed to try this until November. Advantageous to have someone impartial. Will is still male child protection officer.
To sort out official letter for Novembers AGM, listing positions up for re-election etc.
Next meeting to take place on Wednesday 3rd October at the Three Golden Cups.
