Southerndown S.L.S.C.

Chairpersons Report 2005-2006

Southerndown S.L.S.C.- Patron: Earl of Dunraven.

2005/6 has been another very successful year for all of us at Southerndown Surf Life Saving Club. Our reputation is constantly growing and our masses of new members this September is testament to the good work we are doing. It has also been great to see many people returning to the club.
I am very proud of the fact that Southerndown continues to be a friendly and encouraging club. It has always been our ethos to encourage everyone to do their best in what ever aspect of Surf Life Saving they choose, but above all we believe that Surf Life Saving is about saving lives and believing in every member of our team as equals. Every member of our club has always been as welcome and valuable as any other, and I hope that this continues into the future.
We have done very well at competition this year and I am very proud of all our members who took part. The new competition training is proving more and more popular and encouraging new members as well as improving the standards of members who continue to train hard. Thanks to everyone who helped to coach those sessions (especially over the summer months when I was ill).
Many thanks to Angharad Llewellyn who took on the role of Competition Secretary this year and has since been encouraging our members to have a go! According to the President of Surf LifeSaving Wales we have progressed from a small club to a ?medium? club?? quite an achievement?? It was great to see so many of our nippers taking part in the Still Water competitions for the first time this year and I hope that this enthusiasm will go forward into Nipper Carnivals in the summer. As always our Juniors and Seniors were superb!
I am pleased to say that our lifesaving coaching continues to be top class and this year we have continued to use a new series of pool awards- using the water safety series throughout nippers and juniors, and the RLSS lifesaving and Bronze awards throughout Juniors and Seniors. Our NARS and Lifesavers uptake has been great again and I have received many very pleasing comments from fellow examiners who have praised the standards of everyone we have presented for an award.
RLSS Bronze- 15. NARS- 8 LIFESAVERS-2 INSTRUCTOR-1
IRB CREW- 3.
I would like 2006-7 to be the year we encourage more of our older members to become qualified lifeguards, instructors and examiners as well as qualified coaches. Some Senior members of the club are already part way through this process and due to a lack of coaching qualifications offered by SLSA Wales, we are coming up with our own club coach certificate which should be up and running this year. It would be great if some of our parents decided that they too would like to become qualified? This summer we had lots of parents helping out with coaching on the beach, thank you very much for this support, if you would like to help again this year please let us know and we?ll get you CRB checked and into a wetsuit!
The patrolling and coaching certificates proved popular again this year and show what a dedicated team of lifeguards we have here at Southerndown. Patrolling allows us to show the public exactly why we train, and is a way of giving something back to the community. It is my hope that this year will see us branching out more into the community by giving more talks for local groups or providing training sessions for other organisations. Any one who is interested please contact us, at any time of the year.
